The Commission prescribes technical rules and standards applicable to telecommunications equipment used by service providers and individuals in the Solomon Islands to ensure against damage or quality degradation to the telecommunications networks or services and safeguard the public. In general, where equipment has received approval in other major markets such as Australia or New Zealand, it will be approved for Solomon Islands with further enquiry.
The Commission also prescribes the conditions and aprroval processes necessary for the manufacture or import of telecommunications equipment in and into the Solomon Islands.
The Telecommunications Commission is required to carry out public consultations on the effect of intellectual property laws on the development of telecommunications networks and services in Solomon Islands and may make recommendations to the Minister regarding such matters.
The Commission still developing a generic type approval for communications equipment. In the meantime the technical rules, standards and conditions which will apply for type approval compliance process verifications by the TCSI are set out below.
